PROPATECH VCI FILM
Co-extruded anticorrosive film

Transparent plastic film for total protection: 3-layer technology for prolonged preservation of metal products.

The PROPATECH VCI FILM co-extruded anticorrosive represents the most advanced technological evolution in metal protection from corrosion, manufactured through a 3-layer co-extrusion process that integrates the VCI additive directly into the molten plastic mass. Co-extrusion ensures greater mechanical resistance and mono-directionality of PROPATECH VCI molecules. This innovative technology uses a completely transparent film that allows immediate identification of packaged products, facilitating warehouse positioning, quality control and customs procedures without the need to open the packaging, thus reducing operational times and costs.

The triple functional layer system offers progressive and prolonged anticorrosive protection: the inner layer provides immediate protection, the intermediate one acts as a VCI reservoir for long-term protection, while the outer layer serves as a protective barrier that prevents the dispersion of anticorrosive molecules outwards, concentrating 100% effectiveness inside the packaging. This solution completely eliminates oxidation problems during transport and storage, is particularly appreciated by the global automotive and steel industry for its practicality and cost-effectiveness, and offers the possibility to choose versions with recycled plastics up to 30% or biodegradable for a more sustainable approach.

PROPATECH VCI FILMS comply with TRGS 615 standard.

Problems solved by this product

VCI can protect all metals?

There are different types of VCI depending on metal to protect.

Before using a product packed with VCI film or paper, do I have to clean it?

It is not necessary, as PROPAGROUP VCI film and paper leave no residuals on goods. In fact, because of the absence of oil and grease, PROPATECH VCI is one of the client’s favourite products: they receive a qualitatively perfect, clean and ready to use product.

What is corrosion?

Corrosion is a chemical reaction between a metal and its environment which results in a gradual destruction of metal and degradation of its properties.

Do VCI products have an active side?

There are 2 types of VCI paper: double-faced paper, impregnated on both sides, or one-sided PE coated paper. This latter is active only on one side, while the other consists of a barrier film able to keep the VCI within the package.
VCI film is always active on one-side.
On both VCI paper and film the active side (to be oriented toward the metal) is easily distinguishable, as it is opposite to the printed side.

What VCI stands for?

VCI stands for Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor.

Which are the advantages/disadvantages of plyethylene VCI compared to other VCI products?

VCI polyethylene has the big advantage of keeping VCI inside the packaging and of making a barrier, mainly isolating the product to protect. Furthermore polyethylene is very easy to use during packaging and the operations are much rapid, allowing an ease closing. As known, with the plastic packaging, in particular situations, is much easier that condensation occurs inside the packaging. This disadvantage can be easily solved with the use of desiccant products, perfect to reduce the humidity level, thus eliminating risks of damages caused by humidity.

Is VCI dangerous for the health of people working directly with anticorrosive products for packaging?

Anticorrosive VCI products used in the packaging are not dangerous for the health of people because VCI is a physiologically inactive substance. Any problem of eye or skin irritation have been found in people that directly worked with packagings treated with VCI. In any case, because VCI is a chimical substance, is suggested the use of gloves when in contact with the anticorrosive packaging. We also suggest to always ask for the safety data sheet to our customer care before using anticorrosive Propatech VCI products for your packagings.

What happens to VCI after the packaging received is opened?

VCI is a volatile substance so, once the packaging is opened, it volatilize from metal in one or two hours and it will not leave resuduals.

How long can VCI anticorrosive products be stored?

VCI anticorrosive products can be stored for up to a year and a half, but they must be kept sealed in the original package and not opened.

Why is it important to wear protective gloves when working metals?

It is very important to wear protective gloves as skin acidity can start oxidation of metal.

Corrosion

The chemical or electrochemical reaction between a material, usually a metal, and its environment that produces a deterioration of the material and its properties.

Diffusion

Diffusion is the volatile distribution of VCI molecules into the packaging.

Nitrites

PROPATECH VCI products for the protection against corrosion are free from nitrites.

Nitrites are made of a nitrogen atom and two oxygen atoms negatively charged and it can be found in some anticorrosive VCI products on the market. Its presence has to be allowed and declared from the producer.

Oxidation

A corrosion reaction in which the corroded metal forms an oxide; usually applied to reaction with a gas containing elemental oxygen, such as air.

Rust

Rust is a general term for a series of iron oxides. Colloquially, the term is applied to red oxides, formed by the reaction of iron and oxygen in the presence of water or air moisture. Rust generates metal corrosion.

Sublimation

Transformation from a solid to a gaseous state of VCI molecules starting from the protective material (paper, film, diffusers, foams, etc...).

VCI

VCI is a Volatil Corrosion Inhibitor that can sublimate, from a solid to a gas state, and form a thin invisible layer able to neutralize corrosive agents such as: water vapour, oxygen, saline atmosphere, sulphurous gases and the most common industrial environmental pollutants present in the air.

Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor

The Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor is a chemical substance that inhibits electrochemical oxidation of metals in reaction with an oxidant such as oxygen.
